The King James Version renders Hebrews 6:12 as follows: "That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience INHERIT the promises." In the Greek, the word “inherit” according to the Strong’s dictionary is "kleronomeo" which strictly means “‘to receive by lot’ (kleros, ‘a lot,’ nemomai, ‘to possess’); then in a more general sense, ‘to possess oneself of, to receive as one's own, to obtain.’” Promises are to be CLAIMED or TAKEN POSSESSION OF.
There is a battle involved in taking possession of God’s promises. For example, God promised the children of Israel a land and He promised to deal with the enemies who were holding the land:
And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you. (Joshua 23:5; see also Neh. 9:23)
God told them that they must POSSESS their land. Joshua and Israel could not sit around and wait for the land to be handed to them on a silver platter. There was some warfare involved. However, the enemies who were holding the land were already defeated by God. The job of Joshua and Israel was to simply dispossess the enemy and take possession of that which God had promised them.
God has made promises to His children today but there is a spiritual warfare that we must engage in in order to take possession. Therefore one must conquer every obstacle in order to claim the blessings God has promised. Claiming and conquering go hand-in-hand.
