Romans 9 Does Not teach that God’s Will is Irresistible

Calvinist Proof-Texts Answered

“Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?” (Romans 9:19)

Romans 9 Does Not teach that God’s Will is Irresistible

“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.” (Acts 7:51)

“But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.” (Luke 7:30; New King James Version)

Commentary: Romans 9:19 was not Paul’s statement. He was repeating a question by his objectors felt that they were entitled to God’s favor. Paul went on to explain that reception of God's favor comes by faith (Rom. 9:30-31; 11:23). Proof that Rom. 9:19 is not teaching an irresistible will of God is found in 10:21: “In the meantime, he keeps on reaching out his hands to the Jews, but they keep arguing and refusing to come” (The Living Bible).

There are so many places in Scripture revealing how man has resisted God's will that it would require a book to quote and expound upon them (see Psalm 81:10-12; Prov. 1:24, 25,30; Isa. 28:12; 30:15; 65:2, 12; 66:4; Jer. 5:3; 7:13, 25, 26; 11:7-10; 13:10; 25:4; 26:4-5; 29:19; 32:33; 35:14-15; 44:4-5; Hos. 11:3-5; Zech. 7:11; Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34; John 5:40). Scripture does not contradict itself. Therefore, God's will can be resisted.
