Evangelist George O. Barnes on Sickness

"'For I am the Lord that healeth thee.' Not the Lord that makes you sick. The devil makes you sick. The Lord makes you well .... 'Who forgivethe all our iniquities; who healeth all our diseases:' not who sendeth them." Evangelist George O. Barnes, Sermon, 1883

How Does God Express His Wrath? (Pt. 2) [Meme]

How Does God Express His Wrath? (Pt. 2)

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. (Ezra 5:12; KJV)

But because our ancestors made the God of Heaven angry, he let them be conquered by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, a king of the Chaldean dynasty. The Temple was destroyed, and the people were taken into exile in Babylonia. (Good News Translation)

Commentary: God’s “wrath” is not expressed by God destroying His people using His omnipotent power. Wrath is the removal of His protection and permitting hostile forces to have their way with those He once protected. God often begged and pleaded with His people to put away their idolatry and serve Him but the people preferred their idols over the true God. God was left with no choice but to allow them to have what they want along with the consequences of their choices. This is how God’s wrath is expressed.

An "Over-Emphasis" on Jesus?

Some have been concerned that my emphasis (or what some may perceive as "over-emphasis") on Jesus can over-shadow the truth about the Father.

As far as taking the revelation of Jesus so far that it minimizes the truth about the Father, God did give glimpses of His Father-heart in the OT (Psalm 103:13; Malachi 3:17; Hosea 11:1-4). Nevertheless, it was Jesus who gave the full revelation of God as Father. Therefore, no one can ever exalt Jesus so much that one misses the truth about the Father unless one intentionally excludes the Father (such as some Pentecostal Oneness groups do). A right exaltation of Jesus is an exaltation of the Father. The Father is revealed and glorified through the Son.

Jesus Reveals the Full Truth about God

There is no dichotomy between the God of the OT and that of the NT. It is the same God in both Testaments. However, the Bible is a PROGRESSIVE REVELATION and the full truth about God's love-nature is not seen until Jesus Christ comes to the earth:

Joh 1:17  For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Joh 1:18  No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

1 Joh 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

It was through Jesus Christ that the true understanding of God came. Jesus is the key to understanding the OT. He is the key to understanding God's love in the law of Moses, God's love in the prophetic books and God's love in the OT historical books. God's true nature, regardless of what part of the Bible one reads, cannot be fully understood apart from Jesus.

Why did the Pharisees, the premier theologians, get God so wrong? Why do people today who ignore the truth about Jesus and start from philosophy get God so wrong. Jesus Himself said, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5:39). You simply cannot understand the truth about God apart from Jesus.

How Does God Express His Wrath? (Meme)

How Does God Express His Wrath?

Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? (Deuteronomy 31:17; KJV)

Wherefore the wrath of the Lord was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to astonishment, and to hissing, as ye see with your eyes. (2 Chronicles 29:8; KJV)

Commentary: God’s “anger” and His “wrath” are the same thing. Both passages above explains how God expresses His wrath. In 2 Chron. 29:8, the word “delivered” is from the Hebrew word “nathan” and “The verb [nathan] signifies to permit” (George Phillips, The Psalms in Hebrew, p.116). When people continue to rebel against God, He does not exercise His wrath by personally destroying them through His omnipotent power. He exercises His wrath by removing His protection and permitting hostile forces to have their way with those He once protected.
