There is no dichotomy between the God of the OT and that of the NT. It is the same God in both Testaments. However, the Bible is a PROGRESSIVE REVELATION and the full truth about God's love-nature is not seen until Jesus Christ comes to the earth:
Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
1 Joh 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
It was through Jesus Christ that the true understanding of God came. Jesus is the key to understanding the OT. He is the key to understanding God's love in the law of Moses, God's love in the prophetic books and God's love in the OT historical books. God's true nature, regardless of what part of the Bible one reads, cannot be fully understood apart from Jesus.
Why did the Pharisees, the premier theologians, get God so wrong? Why do people today who ignore the truth about Jesus and start from philosophy get God so wrong. Jesus Himself said, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5:39). You simply cannot understand the truth about God apart from Jesus.
