Interpreting the Bible with the Bible
Does God Create
Handicapped People?
“And the LORD said
unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the
seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?” (Exodus 4:11)
“Then was brought
unto him [Jesus] one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he
healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.” (Matthew
12:22)
Commentary on Exodus 4:11:
2 Samuel 24:1 says that God moved David to number
Israel. 1 Chronicles, speaking on the
same incident, says that Satan moved David (21:1). 2 Samuel 24:1 is written due
to little knowledge of Satan’s activities and is to be understood in the permissive
sense. This also applies to Exodus 4:11 when compared to Matthew 12:22.
“In the deterministic idiom of the culture, actions that
were simply permitted by God, mediated through agents, or accomplished through
the laws of nature, can be attributed directly to God ....references to Yahweh
....creating handicapped babies (Exod. 4:11) ....are an accommodation to the
mindset of the culture.” - David M. Howard, Giving the Sense: Understanding
and Using Old Testament Historical Texts, p. 58
