Does God Elect Only a Few for Salvation? (Part 1)

“Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim. 2:4)

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” (Eph. 1:13)

“This is because he chose you from the beginning to be the first crop of the harvest. This brought salvation, through your dedication to God by the Spirit and through your belief in the truth.” (2 Thess. 2:13; Common English Bible)

Commentary: The Thessalonians were saved by believing the truth, something God desires all men to have knowledge of in order to be saved (John 20:31). God’s choosing was not an irresistible election from eternity. As Thomas Coke explains, “The original word ειλετο signifies a voluntary favourable designation, appointment, and choice of a person to any particular purpose and end; not such a choice as necessarily secures the end, or is inconsistent with the refusal of the person so chosen to accept the favour intended him.” (Coke, A Commentary on the Holy Bible, E-Sword).
